With the rush of the holidays over, we finally get a chance to sit down and breathe a little. Maybe the word resolution has come to mind. The typical things that come up every year for most of Calgary Spirit us are things like losing weight, exercising, maybe reading a little more or learning to cook. These are all great things! And we have such good intentions!

This year, think about it differently. Do things that will impact how you feel in your surroundings. Here are a few things you can do to simplify your Chilliwack Bomber life, tidy up well-loved areas in your home and possibly add value along the way!


1. Stop the pile up. We all have that spot we toss mail. The kids probably throw their coats and shoes in the same corner every day after school. And there’s that one spot where anything without a normal space wind up.

Instead of spending another year in the cycle of pile, sort, repeat… why not take charge? Get yourself a mail sorter for that mail. There are lots of different ways to store coats and shoes that are readily available and really attractive. And for those items that seem to live nowhere in particular, get a bookshelf or a set of colorful baskets. Voila! Instant organization!


2. Dress up your cabinets. Kitchen and bath remodels are always a hot topic. And makeover shows make us feel like we can tackle the biggest task and have a beautiful new space in just three days! The reality is, a little sprucing up is all you need. Wipe your cabinets down with a soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints, then add some new hardware. It will change the whole look, be done quickly… and all without the demo crew and cameras.


3. Light up your life. These winter days can make your home seem a little darker, even if you’ve got your blinds and shades wide open. Change the bulbs in your lamps and fixtures throughout your home, and consider going a little brighter if your fixture allows. You’d be amazed at what something this simple will do!


It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. These little things can be a good start to a great year!

7 Origins of New Year's Traditions You Didn't Know




1. Auld Lang Syne

What you know:

Auld Lang Syne is the traditional song sung by English speakersWindows 8.1 Professional Key
right after stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.


What you didn’t know:

“Auld Lang Syne” literally means “old long since,” or more simply, “times gone by.” It’s an old Scottish song that was originally transcribed in 1796 but not popularized until Scottish immigrants in Canada formed the band Guy Lombaro and His Royal Canadians and sang it at the New Year’s eve party in NYC in 1929. Their version of the song was played at the Waldorf Astoria for over 40 years after that and was broadcast first on radio and then television.

What you know:

Resolutions are the promises you make to yourself to improve your life over the next year (and probably end up breaking them within a month).


What you didn’t know:

People have been breaking new year’s resolutions since ancient Babylonia about 4000 years ago: the Babylonians made promises to the gods in order to receive their favors for the entire year. Quite a bit later, the early Christians believed that beginning of a new year should be spent in reflection on the past one and how to better oneself.

What you know:

January 1st is the first day of the new calendar year.


What you didn’t know:

The original Roman calendar fell out of sync over the centuries since it began in the 8th century B.C.E., and Julius Caesar solved the problem (via the greatest astronomers and mathematicians of the time) by creating the Julian calendar, which is very close to the calendar most of the world uses today. Caesar chose January as the first month because of its namesake, Janus, the Roman god of doorways and beginnings.


4. NYC Ball Drop

The NYC Ball Drop is this big shiny round thing that starts falling at 11:59 on New Years Eve and stops exactly at midnight, to the cheers of everyone watching in Times Square and on their televisions.


What you didn’t know:

The first ball drop was in 1907, and was made of iron and wood. (Now it’s 1,070 pounds, six feet in diameter and made of Waterford Crystal.


5. Fireworks


What you know:

Fireworks are the awesome lights-in-the-sky displays we love to watch on special occasions like the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.


What you didn’t know:

Fireworks were invented by the Chinese in the 880’s, and were used for, among other things, their own New Year celebrations. They believed that noise and fire scared away evil spirits and brought good luck.


6. Making Noise at Midnight

Everyone shouts, “Happy New Year!” when the countdown to midnight is over on New Year’s Eve.


What you didn’t know:

For those who didn’t have fireworks to drive away evil spirits, making noise worked just as well. Today we just use party horns and noise makers instead of wailing horns and beaten drums.


7. Toasting and Clinking


What you know:

To celebrate a special occasion, you pour yourself a beverage, make a toast, and clink your glass with someone else’s before drinking.

What you didn’t know:

The earliest record of anyone making a toast is Odysseus drinking to Achilles’ health in The Odyssey – which was over 3000 years ago. The term “toast,” however, didn’t come into being until the late 17th century, when it was customary to add a small piece of toast or crouton to your drink as a flavoring device, like lime in tequila.

There are several theories why clinking two glasses together began:

  1. The noise would drive away the devil
  2. The sound of the clink would give the drinker all five senses in which to enjoy the beverage
  3. Nobles could avoid being poisoned by sloshing a bit of their drink into their buddy’s glass, Windows 8 Professional Key
    thus ensuring one could not risk poisoning the other.

There are a huge variety of locations to choose from, so you can take an easy drive to your local one, or be adventurous and try one you haven’t yet a little further out. They are a perfect outing for families or those looking for just plain fun. The fairs feature activities such as carnival rides, pageants, races, music, crafts and of course tons of delicious Southern fried goodies.

How to Enjoy Culture on a Budget

Being a cultured person in this day and age is an expensive endeavor – one of the reasons why things like classical music and fine arts have been associated with the rich elite. But if you want to pursue it anyway, here are some easy hacks for free or inexpensive ways to enjoy ‘high culture’ in Nashville.

Into the Woods

Music schools are host to the finest of young musicians, and their concerts are on caliber with their performers who will one day play with the finest orchestras. Nashville is host to Vanderbilt University, whose Blair School of Music is one of the best in the country. Tickets for these concerts and shows are very inexpensive (usually around $5-15) or free. If going to TPAC (Tennessee Performing Arts Center) is out of your price range but you enjoy a good musical, check out Stephen Sondheim’s wonderful show Into the Woods by Vanderbilt Opera Theater November 15th or 17th. Or if you’d prefer some traditional classical music, on November 20th the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony has a concert entitled ‘Musique Francaise,’ highlighting various compositions from their upcoming CD The French Connection. If you want to get in the holiday spirit, on November 24th the Vanderbilt Community Chorus will be singing ‘Holiday Favorites.’ These are just a few of the many programs Vanderbilt has every semester. If fine arts are more your cup of tea, do some research on your favorite museums, because typically they will have special deals on occasion or certain days or times that are completely free of charge. For example, the Frist (an art museum  in downtown Nashville) offers many free days to the public, you just have to check the calendar!

Buying a House is Like Finding a Spouse

It’s true!  House hunting requires the same common sense approach you apply to finding a spouse.  Keep your emotions in check and don’t talk yourself into putting up with something that will drive you crazy later.

Its important to know what you’re getting into even before you start looking.  A good agent can help you with this.  It is imperative you find someone you trust and get along with because the agent will be guiding you through a pretty important decision and they can only help you to the degree that you are honest with both the agent and yourself.  We’ve got a lot of GREAT agents here at Bob Parks Realty and Parks.  I’m just saying…


Know in advance your wants and needs or every house you look at is liable to be the perfect home.  This is so true.  If you don’t know truly what you want and need, you will basically like everything you see, it’s how infomercials get you.  You’re flipping channels and you see a specialized exercise machine.  After about five minutes, you’re sucked in and you order it.  Why?  


When people are uncertain about a decision, they tend to look to outside sources (other people) to guide their decisions.




If you can’t afford it, don’t look at it. 


You can’t “unsee” something you really like but can’t afford.  You’ll think about it too long and it will magically become the Greatest. House. Ever.  Avoid the temptation; don’t look out of your price range. Work up a budget, know what you can afford (allow for unexpected expenses and repairs) and look in that range or less.  You can find a really nice house and be proud that you can afford it and also afford to make changes or renovations to customize the house to meet all your needs.  And you can still afford to eat out and shop.  Ever heard of the term “house poor”?  It means living beyond your means – you are spending all your money on the mortgage and you can’t afford to enjoy your dream house because you’re on such a strict budget to just be able to make the payments.  This is no way to live.  Not only does it do strange things to your psyche but you might actually end up losing the house in the long run.



To thine own self be true.

 Let’s say you’re a Bob Villa type, super handy, knowledgeable about home projects, but what if instead you are actually Tim “the Toolman”  Taylor – you spend a good bit of time and money in the emergency room and paying others to fix your home repairs?  Or maybe you just overestimate the time and money requirements of the fixer-upper you are looking at.  The point is, most jobs are twice as expensive and time consuming as you expect – ask anyone who has done a renovation.  There is no such thing as a contractor who finishes on time and under budget.   Most fixer-uppers have hidden surprises that no one could have accounted for and it takes a lot more money and time than you originally planned for.  If you choose to purchase a home that requires some renovations, have a realistic understanding, lots of patience and deep pockets.



There are plenty of fish in the sea.  

Same is true of houses.  The reality is this – you will most likely make compromises when finding the house for you.  Unless of course you are lucky enough to build your million dollar custom dream home, and in that case, you’re totally not reading this blog.  New listings come on the market every day.  Do not let emotions cloud your judgment.  A hard sell, a pressured sell, or your uneasy gut feeling is not usually the sign of a house that was meant to be.  When I bought my house I lost it twice in two months to higher bidders.  Two times the owners came back to me because I had the financials.  My point?  It was meant to be my house and I lost it twice before the deal came together.  If your offer is turned down the first time, it could come back around, or there’s clearly a better house out there for you.



If you take anything away from this, let it be an understanding of the importance of knowing what you can afford and what you really want.  You will be so much happier later if you figure out what you want and need now.  Seriously, give us a call or shoot us an email – we really do have some great agents who would love to help you through this process. 

Make-A-Wish: New Volunteer, Post #1

Middle Tennessee-PMS293As a corporate sponsor, Bob Parks Realty provides in-kind and financial support on an annual basis for Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee.  This come largely from our agents.  Our agents, I have to brag on them – they may not read my emails and they may not attend our training classes but they make me proud because they are so supportive of the communities in which we all live and work.  From boy scout troops to families in need to large charitable organizations and animal shelters, we run the gamut on philanthropic endeavors.  Ok, I got sidetracked thinking about all the feel-good stories I hear through the grapevine…


I am not a real estate agent, so I don’t share a portion of my home sales to Make-A-Wish (MAW, for short), but I wanted to help.  When I was in college, I worked for Disney World (I am so glad this was before the uprise of social media and none of you can google me in my costume singing and dancing at the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue.) I volunteered with the Give Kids the World program that works in conjunction with MAW and other charitable organizations at the Orlando, FL mega theme park:  Disney World.  It was an honor.  I’ve wanted to get involved again, but we all know about good intentions.  Fast forward to 2013 and I’ve taken a job with Bob Parks Realty where we are a corporate sponsor with MAW Middle Tennessee.  It was a sign!


Last week, I attended the MAW Volunteer Training program.  I am now equipped to go out into Middle Tennessee and meet families who have signed up for wishes and talk to the children to see what they would like for their wish.  I’m both excited and intimidated.  In the coming months, I will update you on my journey.  I won’t be able to talk about the families directly, but I can speak in general terms.  I can’t wait to see what happens.

I’ll leave you with two things:

A Short Guide to the Wonders of Blogging

The goal of blogging is to build the relationship and stay relevant and be remembered by your current clients, past clients and future clients.  This is not a sales platform!


Blogging is your element of distinction – it’s what makes you stand out beyond the normal array of obligatory tools offered by all the other real estate professionals.


Define the BLOG:

-Outline your plan of action and figure out how you want to differentiate yourself.

-Be true to yourself:  If you have never opened the hood of your car, do not blog about performing automobile repairs!

-Choose popular topics…. Or not.

Approach the BLOG:

-Will you post random thoughts; ideas and stories based on your funny, whimsical personality and become a source of entertainment for your web site guests?

-Will you post about specific topics and encourage readers to write in and ask questions, perhaps a Q & A blog once a week or month?

-Will you select one idea and own it?  The widget expert, the community sports center, the neighborhood know-it-all?

Structure the BLOG:

-Trust is the #1 factor in moving forward in any relationship.

-Be consistent – commit to a writing schedule. People will not come back if you don’t keep at it.  (They won’t trust you if you’re a flighty writer.)

-Be honest and truthful – seriously.

-Check your facts – again, seriously.

-Give credit where credit is due, don’t steal photos or ideas, it’s not nice and it leaves you vulnerable to litigation or fines. Giving credit is as easy as hyperlinking a photo or phrase to the website where you found it.

-Invite comments and actually respond to them.  Be prepared to solve readers’ problems.

-Add pictures.

-Be authentic – people will know if you don’t know what you are talking about.


Understand the BLOG:

-Sometimes you miss the mark.  It’s ok – writing improves with time.

-People are mean, especially when they feel anonymous.

-You cannot please everyone, and frankly, who wants to?  That would be exhausting.

-Someone else will always do it better.  Don’t go there.  Comparison is the thief of joy.
